Instructing a young lady at Roskeen
Doug Single Spey Casting against an up-steam cross wind
Once the rudiments of Traditional
Spey Casting are mastered, Doug then shares his knowledge of the art of Salmon Fly Fishing, using the 'off the reel' technique, plus River craft, Etiquette & Safety on the Munster Blackwater
River.
Having made the change from
Stillwater Trout Fishing
in the UK, Doug instructs and guides many first time Salmon Anglers each year, sharing
with them his experience, understanding and passion for Salmon Fly
Fishing.
Doug is a fly fishing purist but has no
objection to anglers who wish to spin artificial baits in high water.
He is totally against any form of
natural bait fishing. ie worm. shrimp &
prawn.
He devised the
KILBARRY STUD FLY,
one of a range of very successful Salmon Fly patterns
for the Blackwater, which have been featured in "Fly Fishing and Fly Tying"
, "Salmon, Trout & Sea Trout" and Flydresser Magazine. Doug's
Kilbarry Summer + Autumn Shrimp patterns have been published in the new book Shrimp
& Spey Flies for Salmon published by
Merlin Unwin books.
Doug has first-hand knowledge
of the best available Fly Fishing
Beats on the Munster Blackwater.
The Blackwater offers great Fly Fishing sport for
Spring, Summer and Autumn Salmon
(Multi Sea-Winter Fish) and Grilse (One Sea-Winter Fish).
When you take Doug as your Guide, he
will not be fishing (as many unqualified ghillies do on this river). He believes
that you the guest should catch the fish not him. Doug will share his knowledge,
put you on the best lies and give advice on which fly pattern, size and depth to
fish it and will be very pleased to net your fish.
Doug is an Affiliate Member of The Fly Dressers Guild and also
has membership of
The Salmon & Trout Association & FISSTA. He is the Munster Blackwater
correspondent for 'Trout and Salmon' Magazine. In 2004 Doug was
made a member of The Flyfishers' Club.
In February 2001 Doug
was
made a member of The Angling Writers' Association and in 2002 and 2003 won
awards for his column in Trout & Salmon.
